Beautiful Summerland, BC is a small, very quaint, little town in the Okanagan Valley. Spectacular beaches and parks, beautiful mountains for biking and hiking, orchards, vineyards, unique shopping and wonderful restaurants. It takes about 4 hours to drive to Summerland from White Rock, BC... depending on traffic.
My family and I went to Summerland because my dad’s family lives there. His parents, Edith and Bob Shewfelt, rasied my dad and his sisters in Summerland. My grandfather, Bob, was the mayor of Summerland in 1987 and served for 2 terms.
Our adventure began on Friday with our campsite at Peach Orchard Camp Grounds. We set up our tent only to realize we forgot our pump to blow up our air mattress. LUCKY for us we camped on grass so the ground was quite comfortable. Having only camped twice in my life it was a fun experience and I was determined to get that darn mattress blown up!
That night, we ate a DELICIOUS meal at Local Restaurant by the Waterfront Resort right on the water in Summerland. Had a delicious steak burger and ice berg salad…yum…my mouth is watering just thinking about it again…
We spent the Saturday at the Penticton Farmers Market, which was a ton of fun! From fresh organic vegetables, cool hippy jewelry, home baked goods and the famous Backyard coffee beans…it was a treat to snap up these goodies. We dropped of my sister and niece Stella for nap time as we all headed to Laughing Stock Winery to taste and enjoy wine with owner and winemaker (and friend of my parents) David Enns. He treated us to a tour and our own tasting, even giving us some tips for food pairing! If you haven’t tried their wines my favourite was their Syrah 2009 and Portfolio 2008 - so smooth! Both are red wines…but lets be honest…ALL of their wines are delicious and you can’t go wrong with any.
We finished our evening at the beach kayaking, barbequing, and ended up at the Casino and The Barking Parrot in Penticton for drinks and dancing!
Sunday we floated down the channel in Penticton! 9 of us all floating down in inner tubes! Laughing, having a few drinks, and on the way out listened to Relvis perform his hits at the Hounddog eatery, LOL. What a hoot! We went back to the beach to rent peddle boats, and a seadoo for some fun on the lake! Finished off with a yummy dinner at the Stonehouse in Summerland.
Monday we had coffee at Good Omens (serving those delicious Backyard Beans). We stopped by The Bench which is a local restaurant in Penticton that is organic, homemade and serving the best of the best… if you are in this area this a must! It is packed with people, so be prepared to wait and they only serve Candiano’s (not Americano’s)…EH!
Next time you are there check out these places…you won’t be disappointed! Adventures in Summerland are the best kind!
