SASSY: Service Above Self Surrey Youth Awards

Have you heard of the SASSY awards Oct 14th?

Back in September the Surrey Now put out an article highlighting the Sassy awards, recognizing Surrey, BC youth for their selfless efforts in making our community a better place. My brother, Mark Shewfelt, was nominated for an award for his humanitarian efforts around the world. There are many nice things I can say about my brother, he truly is a selfless guy. Having been the "good" kid growing up, we always knew Mark would go off to do great things. For a young guy, Mark has been on many humanitarian trips: San Francisco, Thailand, Kenya, and his most recent trip with my mom to Haiti. Mark is in his 3rd year of Pre-Med at Western University in London Ontario. He is a tutor part time when he is not studying and he is also in a club called Right to Play, an organization working that uses sport and play to enhance child development in areas of disadvantage. He plans to attend Medical School and be part of Doctors without Borders and continue to give back. Whether Mark wins the award or not, the SASSY awards OCT 14th will be highlighting MANY incredible youth from our back yard...Surrey, BC. The winners will receive a $500 scholarship and they will also win $500 to go towards the charity of their choice.

One of the awards I am most looking forward to hearing about is called "Against the Odds". This award is given to youth in Surrey who have come back and persevered over their hardships in life. Some of the stories of these youth sound amazing and I am really looking forward to recognizing these young leaders in our community.

The main speaker is Craig Kielburger, Co-Founder Me to We who has an incredible story of how he started his foundation to end child slavery across the world. He was as young as 13 when he started his company and is now one of Canada's most influential people.
